In Welcoming the Lord’s Return, We Need to Humbly Seek the Truth Like Nathanael
Let’s take a look at several biblical verses that record how Nathanael welcomed the Lord Jesus: “Philip finds Nathanael, and said to him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. And Nathanael said to him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip said to him, Come and see. Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and said of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile! Nathanael said to him, From where know you me? Jesus answered and said to him, Before that Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you. Nathanael answered and said to him, Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel” (John 1:45–49).
From these verses, we can see Nathanael had notions about the Lord Jesus at first and thought that the Messiah shouldn’t be born in Nazareth, but he didn’t cling to his notions. Rather, he chose to seek humbly and carefully listen to the words of the Lord Jesus. When hearing the Lord Jesus speaking of the matter he prayed under the fig tree, he felt that the Lord Jesus was all-powerful and all-knowing and able to see into the deepest recesses of man’s heart, and that He was totally different from ordinary people. Therefore, he put aside his notions, acknowledged that the Lord Jesus was the coming Messiah, and then accepted Him and gained His salvation.
Nowadays, the Lord Jesus has come back, and He is Almighty God, Christ of the last days. Almighty God has expressed the truth and done a stage of work of judging and purifying man. Upon hearing the news, you may have various notions. But if you put aside these notions like Nazareth and harbor a heart of humbly seeking the truth to read the words of Almighty God, and as soon as you can recognize the voice of God and then accept and follow Him, you will have welcomed the Lord. Just as the Lord Jesus said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3).
